What to wear in Rome in December, packed into a free cabin bag

Milder and sunnier than northern Europe, but wetter than you'd think. Romans dress warmly, in earthy colours.

12.7 °C (55 °F) avg high 4.7 °C (40 °F) avg low Fits a 40 × 30 × 20 cm free bag Planned for 4 nights

Rome is the warmest of our European December cities, with sunnier days and double-digit highs. It's also the rainiest by total rainfall, which tends to arrive in heavier bursts on fewer days. You'll want a proper coat, but not the thermal layers you'd need in Vienna or Prague.

Romans dress for the season, not the thermometer, so expect wool coats, parkas and big scarves even on a bright day. Here's how to blend in from a 40 × 30 × 20 cm free bag.

Normals are 30-year averages, not a forecast. Sunrise, sunset and daylight are calculated for the 15th of the month in 2026 (local time). °F and inches are converted from the metric figures. “n/a” means the station doesn’t report sunshine in this dataset.

  • Cool days, cold nights. Average highs are in the low teens and lows are around 5 °C (measured at Ciampino, just outside the city).
  • The highest December rainfall of our European guides (about 98 mm), but spread over only about 9 wet days, so it tends to pour when it rains.
  • Much sunnier than Paris or London: roughly two and a half times the December sunshine hours of Paris.

The moodboard

3 outfit formulas

mix, match, repeat ↓

Earth-tone sightseer

Forum, Trastevere, long walks
  • Camel or chocolate wool coat (or a parka on rainy days)
  • Merino or cashmere crewneck
  • Dark straight or wide-leg jeans
  • Leather loafers or waterproof boots
  • Oversized wool scarf

Tip: Olive, sienna and chocolate pieces all mix with each other, so a small capsule makes lots of outfits.

Vatican and churches

St Peter's, Vatican Museums, basilicas
  • Knee-covering midi skirt or trousers
  • Long-sleeve top or fine knit
  • Tights
  • Comfortable flat boots
  • The coat, plus a scarf to cover up

Tip: Plan this outfit for the day you visit St Peter's or the Vatican Museums so you're not turned away.

Aperitivo hour

Evenings, dinner
  • Silk-feel blouse or fine knit
  • Tailored trousers or jeans
  • Leather loafers
  • Wool coat and scarf

Tip: Smart but relaxed: Rome isn't overly dressy, so loafers and a good coat are enough.

Swatches are a colour guide for each formula, not product photos.

Liquids: going vs coming home

Going (from the UK)

UK airports vary. Heathrow, Gatwick, Birmingham, Bristol, Edinburgh, Belfast International, Belfast City, Bournemouth, Southend allow containers up to 2 litres; most others, including Manchester, Stansted and Luton, are still 100 ml.

Flying home from Rome
  • 2 litresRome Fiumicino (FCO)to re-check
  • 100 mlRome Ciampino (CIA), in a 1 L clear bagto re-check

Pack your liquids to 100 ml for the whole trip.

Liquids rules by airport, with sources →

Check your room first

Read the hotel, Airbnb or hostel listing, or message the host, and ask whether they provide:

  • Iron or steamer
  • Hairdryer
  • Toiletries: shampoo, shower gel (conditioner often isn’t supplied)
  • Towels, plus beach or pool towels
  • Washing machine or laundry service
  • Plug adapters or USB sockets
  • Kettle, tea and coffee
  • Slippers and a robe
  • A safe

Hostels often don’t provide towels or padlocks.

Bring your own hair products. Most hotels supply shampoo but often not conditioner. Decant favourites into leak-proof travel bottles under 100 ml (fill them about ¾ full), or switch to solid bars, which don’t count as liquids. Travel bottle sets on Amazon UK ↗ · Solid shampoo and conditioner bars on Amazon UK ↗

Every item they provide is one you don’t carry.

No-iron packing

Pick fabrics that don’t crease. Woven cotton and linen crease; knits, merino, jersey and most polyester blends barely do.

  • Hang creased clothes in the bathroom while you shower.
  • Pack a small crease-release spray under 100 ml (it counts as a liquid).
  • Roll clothes, and keep crease-prone pieces in a packing cube on top, not in a vacuum bag.
  • Check whether your hotel or Airbnb has an iron.

Buy it there?

Adding a checked bag typically costs around £60–80 return on a budget airline. So if your bag is full, buying bulky or liquid items when you arrive is often cheaper.

Think sun cream, full-size shampoo, insect repellent, a beach towel or flip-flops.

Usually yes in this destination: Italian supermarkets are generally around UK prices or a little below.

More on buying it there →

Tick items off as you pack (your ticks aren’t saved). Liquids rules depend on your departure airport and change from time to time. Check your airport’s current security rules before you decant your toiletries (see liquids rules by airport).

Free baggage check

Flying there on Ryanair, easyJet or Wizz?

  • Ryanair and Wizz Air give you a free 40 × 30 × 20 cm under-seat bag. Wearing the coat and boots leaves room for loafers.
  • easyJet's free bag is 45 × 36 × 20 cm. Vueling basic fares match the 40 × 30 × 20 cm box.
  • Rome's December is mild enough that a parka worn over one knit covers most days, which saves space.

Duty-free bag: Ryanair: extra bag allowed · easyJet: extra bag allowed · Wizz Air: extra bag allowed. It still has to fit under the seat or in a locker, and gate staff decide. Duty free and your free baggage →

Sizes come from each airline’s official page (see our free baggage reference for links). Rules change, so check your booking before you fly.

Baggage picks

The ticks compare each bag’s stated outer dimensions with each airline’s free-bag size. A struck-through name means the bag is too big for that airline. Soft bags squash a little; hard cases don’t. We haven’t tested these bags ourselves yet.
